PRIMETIME - January 2020

Watchmaking in the News.

I hope you are doing fine and we are happy to share this new edition of PRIMETIME despite quite some gloomy forecasts for the watchmaking industry in the months to come.

The situation was already quite complicated before the recent outbreak of this coronavirus crisis, but this will naturally have severe consequences as the industry has become so dependent on Chinese consumers in the last few years. Just for the Swatch Group, it is believed that more than 50% of its global turnover is directly linked to China and this will of course hit them pretty hard, but same can be said for so many other brands too.

One of the most immediate consequence is that the Swatch Group has just cancelled their yearly show which was supposed to take place in early March in Zurich and now we will see what will happen for the big venues of Watches & Wonder and Baselworld. Anyhow, we still saw a few interesting timepieces in the recent weeks and despite the situation, we know we will see some more in the coming weeks/months too.
