The Quality Factor: The Best Number To Illustrate Precision
The quality factor, also known as the Q factor for short, is considered by experts as the best indicator to evaluate the precision of watch.
It is calculated using a complex formula that in particular takes the frequency and the amplitude of the balance’s oscillations into account. It also helps to determine the ability of the regulator to utilize the energy it receives from the spring barrel. It has been proven that the efficiency of the regulator depends in particular on its stability and minimal sources of friction between its components.
Douglas A. Bateman is an English physicist who studied this question in depth. He recently gave a talk at the EPFL Microcity in Neuchâtel that was organized by the Instant-lab Laboratory headed by Prof. Simon Henein; the laboratory, sponsored by Patek Philippe, is focused on fundamental research in kinetic and technological innovation at the centimeter scale. Last year, it announced its first creation: the IsoSpring, which we presented in a previous report.
